Erebus joins the greats by taking out both championships
Erebus Motorsport made a monumental mark in the annals of the Repco Supercars Championship by securing both the drivers' and teams' titles in the same year, a feat achieved by only five other teams in the history of the sport. The 2023 season saw Brodie Kostecki emerge victorious as the drivers' champion, while Erebus, with its formidable Coca-Cola Chevrolet squad, claimed the teams' championship, cementing their status in the racing elite.
The thrilling climax of the season unfolded at the VAILO Adelaide 500, where Kostecki clinched the drivers' title on Saturday. The excitement was far from over, as the teams' title was still up for grabs heading into Sunday's race. Erebus' primary challenger, Triple Eight Race Engineering, was trailing by 161 points but still had a chance to spoil Erebus' double championship aspirations.
However, Erebus' path to glory was cleared when Triple Eight's Shane van Gisbergen was disqualified from Sunday's race. With consistent performances from Kostecki and teammate Will Brown, who finished eighth and fourteenth respectively, Erebus Motorsport clinched the teams' championship by a margin of 176 points.
This victory placed Erebus alongside some of the most illustrious names in Supercars history. The team joined the ranks of the legendary Triple Eight, Holden Racing Team, Stone Brothers Racing, DJR Team Penske, and HSV Dealer Team—all of whom have previously achieved the coveted double championship.
The teams’ championship has been a hallmark of excellence since its inception in 1999, with Holden Racing Team dominating the early years and achieving the double four times. Stone Brothers Racing and HSV Dealer Team also had their eras of supremacy in the mid-2000s. Meanwhile, Triple Eight emerged as a dominant force, winning eight teams’ championships between 2008 and 2016, although they missed out on the double in 2010 and 2015 when Ford drivers claimed the drivers' title.
DJR Team Penske entered the fray with teams’ championships in years where their star driver, Scott McLaughlin, narrowly missed or won the drivers' title. Triple Eight then added two more doubles in 2021 and 2022, setting the stage for Erebus to make history in the first championships of the Gen3 era.
Erebus' triumph in 2023 is not just a testament to their skill and strategy but also marks a new chapter in the ever-evolving narrative of the Supercars Championship. With 10 race wins and 13 pole positions in the season, Erebus Motorsport has undeniably etched its name in the annals of Supercars history, joining an elite group of teams who have mastered the art of winning both the drivers' and teams' titles in the same year.
