Formula open series to open new doors for open wheel drivers
In 2023, the Australian motorsport landscape will witness the introduction of a new category known as the Australian Formula Open, offering a platform for "wings and slicks" racing across the country. This novel category aims to unite a variety of racing cars, including Formula 3, Formula Renault/Toyota, and Formula 4 cars, into a single field. This strategic move opens doors for vehicle owners to participate in national-level racing and compete for substantial prizes.
The Australian Formula Open series will feature in the SpeedSeries and the recently introduced Motorsport Australia Trophy Series, alongside other significant events. The inaugural rounds are scheduled for March during the AGI NSW Formula Race event, followed by the Asian Super Trofeo event at The Bend in June. Further events will unfold, with appearances at Queensland Raceway in August, Sandown as part of the SpeedSeries in September, and the 2023 Island Magic event at Phillip Island.
Tim Macrow, a six-time S5000 winner and Gold Star champion, who founded the category, expressed his enthusiasm, reflecting on the successful debut of the Australian Formula Open at Phillip Island last year. Discussions with the Australian Racing Group (ARG) revolved around bolstering the open-wheel landscape in Australia, aiming to establish a seamless transition from state-level open-wheel racing to prominent events like the Adelaide 500. As part of the collaboration, the 2023 Australian Formula Open Champion will be awarded a fully funded test in a Tim Macrow Racing-prepared S5000 and free entry to their first round of any future S5000 campaign.
The Australian Racing Group, responsible for managing the S5000 category, highlighted the significance of the Australian Formula Open in cultivating a pathway for prospective S5000 competitors. As S5000 gains traction within the Australian motorsport scene, the creation of this progression path is seen as a strategic move to groom drivers for competitive participation in the premier S5000 category. The collaboration between the Australian Formula Open team and Tim Macrow Racing is anticipated to strengthen and build relationships within the open-wheel racing community.
The Australian Formula Open is poised to reshape the open-wheel racing landscape in Australia, providing a comprehensive pathway for aspiring drivers and contributing to the growth and development of motorsport in the region.
