The Road to the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship hits fever pitch

As the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship enters its final rounds, Brodie Kostecki finds himself in a prime position to secure his first championship, marking the inaugural title of the Gen3 era. The decisive moments are approaching, and the championship could very well be decided at the season-ending VAILO Adelaide 500.

Heading into the crucial stages of the championship battle, five drivers remain mathematically in contention. With a total of 600 points up for grabs, the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 and VAILO Adelaide 500 will host four races, each worth 150 points for the victor.

Currently, it's Brodie Kostecki who leads the championship charge, holding a 131-point advantage over his nearest rival, Shane van Gisbergen, the Repco Bathurst 1000 winner and Kostecki's primary competition. Will Brown follows, albeit with a considerable gap of 390 points behind. Brown, driving for Erebus Motorsport, is eyeing a top-three finish this season before transitioning to Red Bull Ampol Racing in 2024, replacing van Gisbergen.

For Penrite Oil Sandown 500 victor Broc Feeney, the title hopes have taken a hit, with a 408-point deficit to Kostecki following a gear lever issue at Bathurst.

Chaz Mostert, the lead Ford driver, faces an uphill battle with a deficit of 547 points, making his championship chances quite remote.

While there were initially seven other drivers with mathematical, albeit unlikely, contention heading into Bathurst, all hopes for the title faded after the Great Race. These included Andre Heimgartner, Cam Waters, Jack Le Brocq, Will Davison, Bryce Fullwood, Anton De Pasquale, and Mark Winterbottom.

For Kostecki to secure the title on the Gold Coast, he must extend his lead over van Gisbergen by 170 points during the weekend's races, making him mathematically unbeatable. If Kostecki enters the Adelaide round with a lead of 301 points, the championship will be Erebus Motorsport's to claim.

Kostecki's path to victory is clear, but it won't be an easy task. Winning both races at Surfers Paradise would put significant pressure on van Gisbergen, who would need to finish 13th or better to maintain a mathematical chance heading to Adelaide.

As the Repco Supercars Championship hurtles towards its climax, the battle for the title remains fierce, and Brodie Kostecki stands on the cusp of becoming the 2023 champion, adding his name to the annals of Supercars history in the Gen3 era.
